A Call to Compete
A downloadable tabletop game
Welcome, challenger, to the Tournament.
(This game is not complete, but it is completely playable! Please read all the way to the end!)
A Call to Compete aims to bring the fun of fighting games out of the screen and onto the table, with all the attacks, blocks and counters that entails. With a cast of colourful characters, varied stages and a unique take on combos, there's plenty to dig into.
I've designed this game to be as welcoming to new players as possible, regardless of your familiarity with the fighting game genre. As such, the only core fighting game mechanics I've consciously omitted are reaction-time-focused mechanics - the aim of the game is to bring the excitement of the genre without the steep learning curve.
Inside, you'll find rules for 1-on-1 fights, attacking and defending, combos, finishers and stages, as well as 2 unique fighters to play as.
If that sounds exciting to you, grab a friend to brawl with and dig in!
This game is itchfunding!
Why itchfunding?
I really want this game to have custom, commissioned art for each fighter - at present I'm not in a situation to make that happen, but I'm excited about the game and want other people to see it. Those that buy it at the reduced price while it's itchfunding will get access to all future updates to the core rules, as well as helping me make the game I want to make a reality, character art and all.
I would say the goal I've set is an optimisitic one, both in the amount I would need to create the game in addition to paying artists and in achievability but hey, it's worth a shot, right?
What do I get RIGHT NOW?
Currently, A Call to Compete contains:
- The core rules needed to play, including 3 variations of the classic 1-on-1 game mode
- Two fighters, Glitch and Granit, to play as, including their character sheets and combo tracks
- A custom stage for each character to add additional options to gameplay
What does the future hold for this game?
I have a lot of ideas for what to add to A Call to Compete. Some of these are earlier in development than others and not all will definitely be included:
- 4 more fighters to add to the roster (mostly complete already!)
- A custom stage for each additional fighter
- Simple formatting versions of core rules, character sheets and stages
- Comissioned art for all fighters (the reason this is itchfunding!)
- A CC-BY version of the core rules to allow others to make their own fighters and stages
- A single player "campaign" mode of play
- A 2+ player game mode, in the vein of Super Smash Bros, to allow more people to get in on the action at once
The items further down this list are most likely to change, depending on how development goes, but those who support the game now will get access to everything included in the core rules, however much that ends up being.
To clarify: the game is fully playable RIGHT NOW. It just doesn't have all the fighters and options that I want it to have. It's a fully formatted work-in-progress, ready to go.
(Future updates probably won't be quite as fully formatted prior to the full release, but I'll be leaving the original files up throughout updates to give a sense of how it will look in final form.)
I'd love to hear your feedback! Let me know what you think in the comments, what you're excited about and any issues that came up in play.
